A commercial illustration practice with the same hand and the same conscience as the paintings.

Elsa Basil draws for brands, publishers, and art directors. For La Ruta Nicaragua her drawing left the page entirely and went onto plates, magnets, notebooks, and a serving board. She illustrates the way she paints: she takes a place apart and rebuilds it as feeling. A children's book is in progress.

Case study

La Ruta Nicaragua

An illustrated identity for Nicaragua that did not stay on paper. The volcanoes and their water, the masks of the fiesta, and then the plates, the magnets, the notebooks, the board carried out of a shop. The same hand, all the way to the shelf.

Five volcanoes in flat orange, blue and violet rising over scalloped teal water under a spiral sun
An erupting volcano between a purple field and the blue and white of the flag, kite birds crossing the sky
An orange volcano over scalloped water, banana palms and a tiled house at its base

One horizon: the same scalloped water runs beneath all three compositions.

A stack of ceramic plates illustrated by Elsa Basil, the top one lettered San Juan del Sur above a row of surfboards
A hand holding a deep blue serving board illustrated with birds and white flowers
A magnet of the Guardabarranco, the national bird, on a watercolor wash
A magnet of El Güegüense, the folk theatre mask, in yellow and blue
A hand holding a cup printed with the San Juan del Sur artwork, its illustrated card behind

And then the objects: plates, magnets, notebooks, and a serving board, each one carrying her hand.
